Infoscreen and Three help make waiting times feel shorter.
Infoscreen delivers continuously updated information across more than 3,000 digital displays in underground stations, buses and trams throughout Austria. The large volumes of data required to keep this content up to date are delivered via mobile connectivity provided by Three.
Three as a partner for mobile connectivity
Since 1998, Infoscreen has been a recognised media format in Austria, designed to make waiting and travel times in underground stations, trams and buses more engaging for passengers. As a digital news and information medium in public spaces, Infoscreen reaches a nationwide audience of millions.
To ensure that screens always display up-to-date content, they are regularly updated via mobile internet. Reliable connectivity is therefore essential. “Originally, our systems were exclusively hard-wired and installed permanently in locations such as underground stations,” explains Michael Jodl, who is responsible for Data and Innovation at Infoscreen. “Since 2013, we’ve also offered mobile solutions and were looking for a telecommunications partner to support mobile data connections for updating our systems. We quickly decided on Three.
Large data volumes at a predictable cost
Infoscreen operates in almost all Austrian federal states, displaying a mix of current information and entertainment content. To ensure smooth updates, buses and trams are equipped with SIM cards provided by Three. These enable content to be retrieved and delivered directly to the Infoscreen displays.
The volumes of data involved are significant. Infoscreen therefore operates with a data pool of around nine terabytes per month, which can be expanded during peak periods such as Christmas. “In most cases, this works very well for us,” says Jodl. He monitors data usage via theThree business platform, which allows him to manage all SIM cards centrally and efficiently. Infoscreen also uses services from Three for mobile telephony and VPN connectivity.
“We want to be the leading digital out-of-home advertising company. To achieve that, we need a strong partner who helps us continue developing this product.”
Fast implementation and close collaboration
“We chose Three as our telecommunications partner because, from a technical perspective, they offered the best overall package at the best price,” says Jodl. “We regularly compare market prices, but Three continues to offer the most convincing solution. Our requirements have also been implemented very quickly.”
Infoscreen and Three are also working together on additional projects planned for the future. Jodl concludes: “We’re very satisfied with the partnership with Three.”
