E-mobility: E-VO enables simple and secure EV charging with M2M connectivity from Three.
E-VO eMobility GmbH is a technology service provider responsible for operating around 8,000 electric vehicle charging points across Austria. The company brings together the expertise of seven energy providers to deliver a shared national charging platform. To make the charging experience as simple and reliable as possible for users, E-VO relies on machine-to-machine (M2M) IoT connectivity solutions from Three.
Building a future-ready charging infrastructure
Climate change is now firmly embedded in public awareness. To meet Austria’s climate targets for 2030, around one third of all vehicles will need to be electric by then. As the number of electric vehicles on the road continues to rise, charging infrastructure — along with the services and systems that support it — must scale accordingly and operate reliably in real‑world conditions.
Through E‑VO eMobility, seven energy providers have combined their expertise in the field of e‑mobility. Together, they operate a shared charging platform covering around 8,000 charging points across Austria, serving both their own customers and a wider network of partners. Their shared objective is clear: to offer end users a simple, secure and seamless charging experience.
To manage this infrastructure efficiently, each charging station is equipped with SIM cards and connected to E‑VO’s central systems via mobile connectivity. For this connectivity, E‑VO works with Three as its technology partner.
Reliable connectivity as a foundation for user experience
“We need charging systems that are stable and cost-effective to operate. They are a key factor in the success of e-mobility in Austria,” says Michael Hirschbichler of E-VO. Reliable and secure data connectivity plays a particularly important role, as vehicle charging is initiated either via a charging card or an app.
“When a customer arrives at a charging station, they expect a fast, secure and reliable charging process. If it doesn’t work smoothly, frustration sets in very quickly,” Hirschbichler explains.
E-VO chose Three as its technology partner because of the quality and reliability of its data connectivity. “Three provides us with excellent data transmission performance,” says Hirschbichler. “This allows us to deliver reliable services to our customers and a consistently stable charging experience for end users.”
Security as a critical requirement
Another key factor in the partnership is security. “It’s important to us that the SIM cards meet a very high security standard,” explains Hirschbichler. “Charging infrastructure is increasingly considered part of critical infrastructure, and that brings additional requirements.”
Three supports these requirements with secure connectivity solutions designed for critical and distributed infrastructure environments.
“Three provides us with excellent data transmission quality.”

M2M SIM cards for seamless operation
The charging stations are connected to the charging station management system via M2M SIM cards. SIM management is handled through the M2M platform provided by Three, which supports multi-tenant administration for E-VO’s customers.
The platform enables continuous monitoring of charging station status, detailed documentation of each charging session with all relevant data, and accurate billing from operator to end customer. At the same time, drivers benefit from a straightforward and reliable charging process at the station itself.
Beyond the technical implementation, E-VO also values the ongoing support and close collaboration. “Even when we have specific requirements for new solutions or innovations, responses are quick and the results meet our expectations. We’re in constant dialogue,” says Hirschbichler.
